Environmentally Responsible
Nicholsons are highly conscious of the environmental impact across
every area of the business. Our rain water is collected and filtered on
site to be fed back into our irrigation system. This is then monitored
closely and delivered to our stock under conservative watering
management usage. We also employ integrated pest management
principles, choosing minimal reactive chemical use, preferring to monitor
and manage acceptable pests and diseases.
We set ourselves rigorous targets to improve our practices and awareness
of the issues surrounding our industry, so we can play a positive role in
our future. Environmental responsibility is at the heart of every decisionmaking process.
Peat Free
Nicholsons have been moving towards peat-free potting for the last
fifteen years. In 2021, we achieved our goal of offering our entire range of
home-grown stock on 100% peat-free substrate, eight years ahead of
production targets set by DEFRA. This long running development has
allowed us to perfect our plant selections and potting mixtures to
ensure our customers receive the best quality plant with the minimum
environmental impact.
Additionally, all our bagged compost has been peat-free since 2012,
almost 20 years ahead of the National target for peat-free status within
bagged products by 2030. We are trialling taupe pots and other recyclable
materials in line with our sustainability ethos.
Sourcing
Nicholsons are now sourcing as much as possible from British suppliers
to reduce potential overseas biosecurity threats, reduce travel miles and
importantly, to support our nation’s growers.

Our Trade Sales Team work full-time to deliver an expert service which
is tailor-made to our customers’ needs and recommendations or
